When you think of your local The Lott retailer, you probably think of a place to grab your lottery ticket, check the winning numbers, or chat about the latest jackpot. But for many communities, these stores are so much more. They’re run by real people, business owners, neighbours, and passionate changemakers who step up to support those around them in meaningful ways.

In Newcastle, we met two local heroes: Michelle, the owner of Nextra Raymond Terrace Newsagency, and her friend and partner in kindness, Kath. Their journey began with something simple. Kath was a regular customer at Michelle’s store. But over time, through everyday conversations, the dynamic duo discovered a shared passion for helping others and a belief in the difference they could make in their community. From those chats, a powerful partnership was born.

In November 2021, Michelle and Kath launched Heart & Soul, a grassroots volunteer initiative that now supports dozens of vulnerable locals each week. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to ensure no one in their community feels forgotten.

Inside the newsagency, a permanent donation basket in invites locals to drop off non-perishable food, essential supplies, and spare balls of wool. Volunteers transform the wool into scarves, beanies, and blankets –gifts that are delivered to the local community centre and aged care homes. It’s a small gesture with a significant impact, especially during the colder months.

Michelle and Kath also coordinate a roster of volunteers who cook and freeze homemade meals. These are stored at the community centre and are available to anyone in need.

Each year, seasonal gift drives for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day help bring smiles to residents in aged care, many of whom may not have visitors. Gifts are thoughtfully wrapped and paired with handmade cards– reminders that someone is thinking of them.

Their Christmas campaign takes community giving even further. From baking festive cakes to preparing meals and distributing wrapped gifts, Michelle and Kath ensure the holiday season is a time of joy, inclusion, and generosity for those in need.

And then there’s their Paper Angels Project. Each angel is handmade, decorated, and adorned with a heartfelt message. Sold to raise funds so Heart & Soul can continue its meaningful work, the angels have become symbols of hope. This year, Michelle and Kath plan to expand the project by boxing the angels and hand-delivering them to local hospitals, offering comfort to patients and staff alike.

Their story is a powerful reminder of why it’s important to support our local communities.

Here at The Lott, we’re committed to supporting a range of community partners across Australia who are making a real difference every day – and even prouder to have retailers like Michelle who embody the same spirt of generosity and care in their local communities.
